Greece Destinations
If you’re looking for history then Athens is where you should start. If you’re wanting relaxation and beaches with a killer view then Santorini is more your style. Every island in Greece has something special to offer, so maybe a Greek Island Tour would be a great option for you. Here are some of the most popular Greece Destinations:
Athens
The capitol of Greece, Athens is the home of the famous Acropolis, museums, and the Temple of Zeus.
Santorini
Probably the most photographed area of Greece this island has some of the best ocean views in the world due to its amazing caldera, cliffs, and famous Fira to Oia hike.
Delphi
The archaeological site of Delphi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once said to be the place where heaven and earth met, it’s home to the famous Temple of Apollo.
Hydra
Need a short day trip option from Athens but want to visit a Greek island? Hydra might be your answer! Hydra is a quaint little island less than 2 hours from Athens by ferry.
Ios
Another Greek island with gorgeous beaches and a killer nightlife, Ios is another fabulous option on your list of Greek islands to visit.
Paros
Known for its traditional villages and large church complex, Paros is another beautiful option for your Greek island tour.
Thessaloniki
This ancient Greek port city is home to historical ruins, towers, and more!
Meteora
This unique UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to the famous rock formations with monasteries perched on top. Definitely a photographer’s dream spot to visit.

Mykonos
Mykonos is known as the party island but it also has beautiful beaches and plentiful restaurants.

What are the best things to do in Greece?
In my opinion some of the best things to do in Greece are to eat, sightsee and relax! What you do will depend on where you go in Greece. On the islands you could visit beaches, wineries, party all night at the clubs, or relax at a fine dining restaurant. In Athens you could see the Acropolis, visit all the amazing shops, take a walk in their beautiful parks, and of course eat more delicious food. Scroll down for my specific restaurant recommendations for each location as well as the top things to do!
Arriving in Greece
Most people will fly into Athens and my recommendation would be to book transportation ahead of time. Yes the metro is pretty straightforward and the cheapest way to get downtown. However, in my experience, unless you are very well traveled and accustomed to jet lag, you might be very exhausted when you arrive. In case you do not sleep on the plane and are extremely jet lagged (like I always am the day I arrive in Europe) I recommend booking transport possibly through your hotel or Get Your Guide. That way you don’t have to figure out public transportation in a foreign country on very little sleep.
If you choose to ignore my advice and opt for the cheaper Metro option then I would recommend taking Metro Line 3 from the airport to city center (Syntagma Square) or whichever neighborhood you book your hotel in.

Getting Around in Greece
As I said in the previous paragraph, when you first arrive I would recommend booking transportation to your hotel in advance. This way you aren’t fighting jet lag and either take a nap or pop into a café for some much needed coffee.
After getting to your centrally-located hotel, I recommend walking as much as possible. There are so many cool and unique shops in Athens that you would miss a lot if you drove or took the metro everywhere. This is why it’s imperative to stay in a centrally located hotel in Athens so that you can experience everything the city has to offer.
Best Resorts in Greece
The best resorts in Greece are the ones that are centrally located in each town or island you want to visit. In my opinion there are three things that make a hotel a great choice: location, food options, and comfort. I usually map out all the places I want to visit along with the train stations (or ferry port for Greek islands) then select a resort that makes sense and is easy to get to. Scroll down to my specific resort recommendations for each island and city we visited in Greece.

Foods To Try in Greece
If you know me, you know that I made a list of foods to try in Greece months before we left for the trip. As a foodie and a major type A planner, I was so excited to try all the authentic Greek foods that I had to make a list. I’m proud to say that I tried (almost) everything on the list with the exception of Ouzo liquor and the galaktoboureko dessert.
Greek Foods to try :
Falafel, loukoumades (Greek donuts), greek wine, freddo cappuccino (iced coffee), souvlaki (meat skewers), tzatziki (cucumber sauce), patates tiganites (Greek french fries), baklava, ouzo and mastika (types of liquor), saganaki (fried cheese), spanakopita (spinach pie), pastichio/pastitsio (greek lasagna), moussaka (eggplant or potato based greek dish), hummus and pita, tomatokeftedes (tomato fritters), courgette balls (kolokythokeftedes), tsipouro (distilled spirit from grapes), tiropita (Greek cheese pie), galaktoboureko (sweet dessert), and kleftiko (slow roasted lamb).
I had tried several of these items in the U.S. before but wanted to see how they compared to the authentic Greek versions. Everything I tried was good but my favorites were the pastitsio, spanakopita, moussaka, and of course the freddo cappuccino.

Best Islands to Visit in Greece
Greek Cyclades:
The Greek Cyclades islands are named because they form a circle in the Aegean Sea and they are some of the most beautiful islands in the world. Most of the 33 islands of the Greek Cyclades are uninhabited. The most famous islands in this group include Santorini, Paros, Milos, Ios, and Mykonos. In my opinion these islands are the best ones to visit in Greece because of their unique volcanic beaches and beautiful crystal clear waters.
For our 10 day Greece Itinerary I chose Santorini and Milos specifically because of the amazing views, landscapes, and beaches they’re known for. Milos is less well known and thus less crowded but has some gorgeous beaches and rock formations that make it truly special. Santorini is very well known because of its beautiful sea views from the blue capped white villages that are all over the internet. I will say, however, that photos can’t really do Santorini justice because the views are truly unbelievable.

Greek Island Tours
While visiting some of the most beautiful islands in the world, you’re definitely going to want to book a tour (or several) to take advantage of the beautiful scenery while you’re there. While we were in Milos we went on a sightseeing sailboat tour around Kleftiko that was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Snorkeling around the gorgous rock formations is something I will never forget. Santorini has some of the best and most unique wineries in Greece so a wine tour would be amazing.
Best Beaches in Greece
The beautiful beaches in Greece are one of the main reasons people visit. With all of its islands and coastline, Greece has some of the best beaches in the world.
Here are some of the best beaches in Greece:
Sarakiniko Beach - Milos
Sarakiniko Beach in Milos is the most unique beach I’ve ever been to. It literally looks like you’re walking on the moon due to its white volcanic rock formations. It’s definitely not your typical beach as it doesn’t have a lot of sand but what it lacks in comfort it makes up for in beauty. With the white rock formations and gorgeous crystal blue waters, I could stay there for hours just soaking up the views.
10 Day Greece Itinerary - Sarakiniko Beach Milos Greece
Paradise Beach - Mykonos
If a party scene is important to you on your travels then I’m sure Mykonos is already on your Greece itinerary! The best party beach in Greece is Paradise Beach on Mykonos. Surrounded by clubs and restaurants this beach is also Mykonos’ original nudist beach.
Red Beach (Kokkini Beach) - Santorini
The Red Beach on Santorini is another very unique beach we visited during our 10 days in Greece. As with anywhere in Santorini it was very crowded but still worth visiting. It was also a bit of a hike to get to the Red Beach from the Akrotiri bus stop, which we weren’t prepared for. Kokkini beach might not be a beach you want to stay all day at due to the crowds, but the unique color and photo ops make it worth the trouble.
10 Day Greece Itinerary - Best Beaches in Greece - Red Beach Santorini
Plaka Beach - Naxos
If peace and quiet are what you’re searching for on your Greece vacation, take a closer look at Naxos. This lesser known Greek island is still home to some beautiful beaches. Plaka beach is easily accessible by bus from one of the hotels in town. Rent a chair or cabana and enjoy your solitude.
Firiplaka Beach - Milos
There are two beaches within walking distance of each other on Milos - Tsigrado and Firiplaka. Between these two I would recommend Firiplaka. Tsigrado is a very small beach only reachable via two steep ladders while Firiplaka is much easier to get to and much larger in comparison. Firiplaka also has a snack and drink bar as well as chairs you can rent. We made the hike down both ladders to Tsigrado only to find that there was literally no space to put our towels down on the tiny secluded beach.
10 Day Greece Itinerary - Firiplaka Beach Milos Greece
Mylopotas Beach - Ios
A sandy oasis with a quick drop-off, Mylopotas Beach in Ios is close enough to several hotels to walk there. There are also several bars and nightlife nearby if you want to party after your beach day. Ios is an island known for its nightlife and beautiful beaches.
Kamari Beach - Santorini
Kamari Beach made it on my list of favorite Greece beaches due to the fact that it has so many great little shops and restaurants right by the beach. We also had fantastic food and drink service from our beach chairs which was lovely. The sand was pretty rocky so they had walkways you could use, so highly recommend bringing a little cash with you to rent chairs (and buy drinks of course).

Best Month to Visit Greece
The best month to visit Greece would be anywhere between April and October but the shoulder months are best. The shoulder months to visit Greece are when the weather is still nice but the crowds aren’t as crazy. The best months to visit Greece would be April, May, September, or October. We went in late September and I thought it was perfect. I think September is the perfect month to visit Greece because the water is still warm from the summer but the crowds have mostly left. We snorkeled in Milos and it was a little chilly but once we were moving around it was great. Most of our beach days were plenty warm on Santorini and Milos too. We were in Santorini and Milos September 23-29th.
How many days is enough for Greece?
If you’re wanting to visit a lot of islands or do multiple day trips from Athens before going to the islands I would say you need a couple weeks to visit Greece. We went for 10 days and saw Athens, Santorini, and Milos and that was perfect for us. I would say to prioritize which islands you want to see first then plan accordingly. Most islands take at least a couple days to explore each. We had a fairly busy itinerary and saw a lot during our 10 days there (scroll down for our full 10 day Greece itinerary).
Is it best to fly or use the ferry in Greece?
Whether to take a ferry or a plane between islands in Greece really depends on how much you enjoy flying vs. taking a boat. We took a ferry from Athens (Piraeus) to Milos and from Milos to Santorini then flew back to Athens before flying home to St. Louis. I wanted to experience the ferry and see each island from the water first and I really enjoyed that.
Seeing Santorini from the water was especially neat because of the huge cliffs that make this island’s views so spectacular. If you have a boat tour planned for every island you’re visiting then taking a ferry might not be important to you. It’s also about $20 more each way to take a ferry unless you find a special deal. Flying is also faster than taking a ferry depending on how early you arrive for your flights and if there are any delays.

10 Day Greece Itinerary
This Greece 10 day travel itinerary is the result of months of research and planning on my part. I love reading reviews and planning timelines for trips so putting this Greece bucket list travel itinerary together was a blast.
In my not so humble opinion, this is the best Greece travel itinerary filled with history, beach days, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. If you want to see the abbreviated 10 day Greece itinerary as well as several other alternative itinerary options, scroll to the bottom of this article.
10 days in Greece – 3 days in Athens
Day 1 In Athens:
If you’re arriving from over 6 hours away from Athens by plane I recommend not planning much on your first day so that you can recuperate. The first day we had transport already lined up from the airport to the hotel so that we could drop our bags and explore. First we went to get coffee and a bite to eat at Eatery which was right next to our hotel in the Monastiraki neighborhood. After getting a bite to eat we checked into our hotel and snagged a quick nap before heading out to explore.
Keeping it low-key the first day we just explored the Monastiraki neighborhood. We visited some shops in Monastiraki Square, the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary. We finished the day with some drinks at Norman Athens Bar before heading back for the night.

Visit ancient churches:
Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary
The Church of Panagia Pantanassa
Holy Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary
Have a drink at Brettos (the oldest bar and distillery in Athens)
Climb up Areopagus Hill (next to the Acropolis) to watch the sunset
Explore the unique shops in Monastiraki neighborhood
Best Area To Stay in Athens
The best area to stay in Athens is the most central to all the sites you want to visit. For us that meant walking distance to the Athens Acropolis, the shops, and all the restaurants on my list. The Monastiraki and Plaka neighborhoods are the most popular areas to stay in Athens because of their central location and plentiful bars and restaurants to visit.
We stayed at the Royalty Hotel Athens during our 3 days in Athens and I couldn’t recommend it enough. They let us check in early, had friendly and helpful staff, and the breakfast buffet was amazing. It’s located within walking distance to all the best places to visit in Athens. I also loved the rooftop bar with views of the Acropolis and the fact that we could see Monastiraki square from our balcony.

What famous Ancient Sites can I see in Athens?
Athens is full of history. Being one of the oldest known cities in the world, it has more history than almost anywhere on record. Named after Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom and war and the daughter of Zeus. Greek mythology is found all over Athens from the ruins to the names of streets and monuments. The ancient churches also show the history of this great city and the various influences that different time periods had over them.
Even the Acropolis itself was renamed several times and dedicated to different religions based on the time period and who was in power. I highly recommend taking a guided tour of the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum so you can truly appreciate and absorb all the history in these magnificent sites. Despite visiting in late September, the Acropolis was still very crowded which makes sense because of how important of a site it is in the world.
Important ancient sites to visit in Athens:
The Acropolis
The Acropolis Museum (not an ancient site but contains ancient artifacts)
The Athens National Archaeological Museum
Ancient Agora
Roman Agora
Temple of Zeus
Aristotle's School
Hadrian's Library
Kerameikos Ancient Cemetery

Best Restaurants in Athens
If you know me (or have looked around my website) you’ll know that I’m a big foodie. I love reading restaurant reviews and planning where to eat before trips. I was especially excited to visit Greece because I love Greek food so much. I also had a list (printed above if you missed it) of Greek foods I wanted to try while in Greece. Here are the restaurants from my list:
SNOB Espresso Gastro Bar- Coffee and brunch
Eatery Bairaktaris - Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Harvest - Coffee, wine and food
Lotte Cafe Bistro - Cocktails, snacks, and cakes
Yiasemi - Breakfast, dessert, coffee and tea
Brettos - the oldest bar in Athens
Psarras Tavern - traditional Greek restaurant
Cinque wine delights- Wine and cheese bar
Bandiera - traditional Greek food
10 Day Greece Itinerary - Peinirli at Retire Rooftop Bar in Athens
Best Day Trips From Athens
The best part about booking day trips from Athens or any other city is that you don’t have to lug your bags from place to place but still get to see everything you want to see. Here are my top picks for Athens Greece day trips:
Visit the island of Hydra - just an hour ferry ride away
Explore the ancient town of Corinth and the Temple of Apollo
How to get from Athens to Santorini
The fastest and cheapest way to get from Athens to Santorini is to fly. Taking the ferry is longer and usually more expensive but can be a more unique experience. If you don’t have any boat tours in Santorini planned, you may want to take the opportunity to see this spectacular island by water first. We went from Athens to Milos then Milos to Santorini during our 10 days in Greece so the ferry ride to Santorini was split into two legs.

Best Area to Stay in Santorini
The best area to stay on Santorini is somewhat debated on many travel blogs. Many people will tell you that Oia is the best place for first time visitors to stay because of the views and lodging choices. In my opinion Fira is actually the best place to stay on Santorini because it’s central to everything on the island. You can take a bus directly wherever you want without a transfer and you can do the Fira to Oia hike the right way.
I usually look for deals on hotels and try to find a nice one within a budget. On Santorini you’ll notice this is hard to do. If there’s one place in the world to splurge on a hotel room, this is it. We splurged on a room with a view and a hot tub balcony to boot and I don’t regret it one bit. The Panorama Suites in Fira has some of the best caldera views on the island and is close to everything in Fira. There are many restaurants and shops nearby and it’s only a 5 minute walk to the Fira bus stop.
10 Day Greece Itinerary - Sunset view from our balcony at Panorama Suites in Fira Santorini
Greece Santorini Resorts
Oia and Fira definitely have some of the best resorts on Santorini. The prices range from $200 a night to $6,000 a night and more. Finding a room with a view is imperative because if you head to any of the popular viewpoints they get extremely crowded, even during shoulder season in Greece. Finding a centrally located resort in Santorini is also important unless you want to pay for expensive taxi rides every day.
Getting Around Santorini
I decided before we even left for our 10 day trip to Greece that we would take the buses around on the Greek islands. From everything I read about getting around Santorini and other islands, it’s the cheapest and easiest form of transportation. Taking a taxi or Uber on Santorini is pretty pricey so we only used one a couple times when the bus wasn’t available. All of the bus routes on Santorini connect to the main stop in Fira, so if you stay here you only have to take one bus to any destination.

Best Month to Visit Santorini
The best month to visit Santorini would be the same as the best months to visit Greece- May through October. The one thing to keep in mind is whether you need it to be warm enough to swim or spend time on the beautiful beaches of Santorini. If you are planning to be in a swimsuit on Santorini then I would say May to September would be your best bet for good weather. May and September being the best months to visit Santorini if you are wanting less crowds.
How to get from Santorini to Milos?
The fast ferry from Santorini to Milos is around 2 hours while a flight is about an hour. Flying is also usually cheaper than taking a ferry. We took ferries from Athens (Piraeus) to Milos then from Milos to Santorini because we wanted the experience. If you’re just looking for efficiency or the best price then flying is your best bet.

Where To Stay In Milos
Adamas or Adamantas (different names for the same place) is the port city of Milos and the best place to stay in Milos. If you’re looking to save on transportation costs book a hotel within walking distance of the ferry port too. We stayed at the Portiani Hotel in Adamas Milos and it was wonderful. The hotel staff was so friendly, I loved watching the boats come in and out of dock, and their breakfast buffet was the best.
BEST HOTELS MILOS
Portiani Hotel - Where we stayed for our 3 days in Milos. Beautiful views, delicious breakfast buffet, and great location. Steps from the Adamas bus stop, multiple restaurants close by, and only 5 minutes walk from the ferry.
Santa Maria Village Resort & Spa - A little bit further from the Adamas port but has a pool and great views.
Delmar Apartments & Suites Milos - Great if you’re looking for something more secluded and romantic.
Artemis Seaside Resort - The most modern of the bunch. Upscale seaside resort away from everything.
